High Season
Chiang Mai's high season, typically from November to February, brings cooler, dry weather. Daytime temperatures average around 25-30°C, with evenings dropping to a comfortable 15-20°C. Upon arrival, you'll find the air clear and crisp, and the city buzzes with activity. This period often coincides with important festivals like Loy Krathong and Yi Peng, when thousands of lanterns fill the night sky, creating a truly memorable atmosphere.
The city's pace during this time is lively, reflecting the influx of visitors and pleasant conditions. Outdoor activities are popular, with many people exploring temples, visiting national parks, or enjoying walking tours without the discomfort of intense heat or rain. The markets are lively, and cafes spill onto the streets as locals and visitors alike take advantage of the delightful weather.
Low Season
The low season, running from March to October, features two distinct periods: the hot season (March-May) and the rainy season (June-October). During the hot season, temperatures can reach up to 40°C, making the city feel considerably warmer and more humid. The atmosphere becomes quieter, with daily life often starting earlier or later to avoid the midday heat.
As the rainy season arrives, humidity remains high, and afternoon downpours are common, although they usually don't last all day. The landscape transforms into lush green, and waterfalls flow powerfully. While outdoor activities might be adjusted for rain, the city maintains a calm charm. Fewer visitors mean a more relaxed pace, offering a glimpse into daily local life without the bustling crowds of the high season.
