High Season (Summer)
Westport's high season, from December to February, brings warm, sunny weather with average temperatures around 18–22°C. The town's atmosphere becomes noticeably livelier as long daylight hours encourage outdoor activities. Upon arrival, you'll find a bustling vibe with many people exploring the local natural attractions, such as the nearby beaches, the Kawatiri River Trail, and the Buller Gorge.
The high season is when Westport truly shines as an outdoor adventure hub. Local events often include market days and community gatherings that reflect the town's relaxed, friendly character. The pace of life remains unhurried, but there's a definite buzz around town, with visitors and locals making the most of the favourable conditions for hiking, cycling, and water sports.
Low Season (Winter)
During the low season, from June to August, Westport experiences cooler temperatures, typically ranging from 8–12°C, accompanied by higher rainfall. The town adopts a quieter, more subdued atmosphere. When you land, you'll notice fewer people out and about, and the landscape appears lush and green from the winter rains.
Winter in Westport offers a different kind of experience, focusing on the dramatic coastal scenery and the region's rugged beauty. While some outdoor activities are less common due to the weather, others, like storm watching or exploring the Murchison region's white-water rivers, become popular. The town's slower pace allows for a more intimate engagement with local life, perhaps enjoying the warmth of a local café or exploring the history at the Coaltown Museum.
